Zithromax (azithromycin) Tablets 250 mg are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the conditions treated. Pregnant and lactating women, patients with weakened immune systems and patients who are being treated for chronic respiratory tract infections, patients with severe infections (e.g. those undergoing surgical procedures, such as bronchopulmonary lavage) and patients with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections may be treated with Zithromax (azithromycin) Tablets 250 mg if the treatment is being initiated for any of the following infections: Bacteroides fragilis (formerly Moraxella catarrhalis), Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter Pylori infection and Bacteroides fragilis in vitro. Treatment should be initiated within 48 hours of the first dose of Zithromax (azithromycin) Tablets 250 mg and for 7 days after the first dose, for the following infections: Bacteroides fragilis infections in women, including women who have received previous treatment with clarithromycin, erythromycin or telithromycin, patients who are in the last 2 weeks of pregnancy or are receiving other treatments for Helicobacter pylori infection. Bacteroides pylori infection is defined as the infection of the stomach or duodenum, jejunostomy or ileostomy. Bacteroides coli infection is defined as the infection of the small intestine, jejunostomy or ileostomy. Campylobacter jejuni is a commensal bacteria that can cause diarrhoea in infants and adults. Zithromax (azithromycin) Tablets 250 mg are not recommended for the treatment of patients who have not been treated with clarithromycin. Patients who are taking other antibiotics should be monitored closely for signs and symptoms of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and skin reactions, including rash, erythema and exfoliative dermatitis.
